In the third round of the men s singles J. B. Crawford (Australia) defeated Gabrovitz, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1; H. M . Austen (England) defeated Denkei, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3; S. von Gramm (Germany) defeated Palmieri, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4: F. J. Hughes (England) defeated M. Bernard, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3; F. J. Perry defeated F. Merlin, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4; Necht defeated D. D. Prenn (Germany), 2-b, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Ip the second round of the women s singles Miss .loan Hartigan (Australia) defeated Miss Cruickshanks (United States), 1-6, 7-5, 6-3; Miss Betty Nutliall (England) defeated Mdlle. N. Crawford and McGrath defeated Bertliet and Thyrneyssen. 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. In the first round of tlie mixed doubles C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand) and Miss Hardwick defeated 1 Bonte and Miss Horner, 6-3, 6-1; Metaxa (Spain) and Madame Adamoff defeated H. C. Hopman (Australia) and Mrs Hopman, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the second round of the singles, R. Menzel (Czechoslovakia) defeated Landry (France) 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Crawford, who was in great form, toyed with his opponent. _ The score does not indicate the desperate fight Merlin (who is not to be confused with A. Merlin, the Davis Cup player) put up'against Perry. The Frenchman saved six match points, and Perry was fully extended. Miss Hartigan was down on© set and behind 3-5 in the second when she cleverly slowed the game to defeat America’s fifth ranking woman player. PROFESSIONAL TOURNAMENT.
NEW YORK, May 24. In the semi-finals of America’s first professional tennis tournament H. E. Vines beat Henri Cochet (France), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, and W. T. Tilden beat Martin Plaa, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
DAVIS GUP MATCH. AMERICANS BEAT CANADIANS IN SINGLES. (Received This Day, 8.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 25. . In the opening singles of the United States-Canada Davis Cup, played at Wilmington (Delaware) yesterday, L. R. Stoeffen (United States) beat Marcel Rainville, 6-1, 7-5, 6-1; and F. X. Shields (United States) beat Walter Martin, §-2, 6-3, 9-7. Rain to-day caused postponement of play.
