COUNTY RESERVES.
INSPECTION BY COUNCIL. WORK INI THE PLANTATIONS. 'Taking a ’bus, members of the Ashburton County Council to-day earned out an inspection of a number of reserves in the County, the schedule covering a distance of about <0 miles. The first reserve visited was one ot 10> acres at Fairton, a portion ot wliich is under consideration for use as a stock route to lessen congestion on the. main road._ \. . ■ +w Returning through Ashburton, the Council went to Farrell s plantation, and Lagmlior where members were ante to gauge the extent of the damage done by the fire which swept through the trees several months mgo. A few miles further along the road, members inspected a plantation at Westerfield where a good deal ot pruning has lately been carried out. lhe plantation, which is about 12 chains wide, comprises 9- or 10-year-old pmes which were planted on the site ot former plantation which was severely damaged in a gale in Octohei, IJI-4. Following the pruning a large amount of debris is lying on the ground and it was decided to clear this away for a distance of one chain from the road to leave a break in case of ‘fire., ine remaining debris will he left where it ; is and should decay in a few years It was also decided to plough the frontage of this plantation and. win e some members were in favour or tppnino- the first row of trees it was agiecd to leave this , for later consideration I’he party then proceeded to Mayfield where"it considered tenders lor planting this season and had luneJi. in© tour of inspection was continued tins afternoon.
