METHVEN The annual festival and sale of. produce under the auspices of St. John's (Presbyterian) Church was held in the Methven Town HalL yesterday afternoon and evening. Being the day of the fortnightly sale there was a large influx of visitors to the township, and this was to a large extent responsible for the largo attendance at the festival. The numerous stalls were well supplied with gifts of produce, fruit, needlework, etc., and those in charge did splendid business .throughout the day. [n the evening a most enjoyable concert was held, the programme being provided by local performers assisted by visitors from Ashburtcn and other parts of the County. The programme was as follow: Pianoforte solos, Miss A. Ruddock i(A§hburton), vocal solo, Mr Stewart (Highbank), recitation, Miss Joyce Campbell; vocal solos, Mrs Bryant, Miss Drummoiid (AshbCrton), Mrs A. Oakley (Rakaia), Mrs L. L. Richards, MrFowke, and monologues, Miss Andrews Rev. R. Morgan expressed the thanks of the Board of Managers for the assistance given by the performers, many of whom had travelled a long way to assist. He also thanked all those who had helped to make the annual effort the outstanding success it was. He further referred to the assistance given by Mr W. S. Jones, who had conducted their auction ' sale for a number of years, and who! was shortly leaving the district. Mr Morgan expressed sincere regret at his departure and on his motion a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. Subsequently an auction sale of surplus goods and jiroduce was by Mr Jones, and a total clearance effected. Those in charge of the stalls were: Neeedlework, Mesdames A. <S. Kennedy, A. G. Foreman, and Syd Smith (in charge); cakes,, Mesdames H. Fryer and A. Guthrie • produce, Mesdames M. Macale, H. E. A. Lock, and A. O. Lochhead ; Mesdames A. L. Mangin, A. Wilson and J. Campbell; sweets, members of Girls' Bible Class • (Miss May Campbell in charge); Lyndhurst Neeedlework, Mesdames C. G. Prebble, P. Prebble, and F. Henderson,; Lyndhurst product,. Mesaames Wright, M. Mo'lloy, and A. Young; tea rooms, Mesdames Jno. Watson, G. Chambers, and a band of willing helpers; chocolate shy, shooting gallery, etc.. Messrs E. McMeekan, G. Olds, A. Wilson and 0. G. Prebble. . MAYFIELD. Tho committee of the Mayfield Women's Institute has decided to forward a donation of £1 Is to the committee of the Fairlie Agricultural and Pastoral Society for a competition for an afternoon tea tray for four persons. The first meeting for the year of the local branch of-the New Zealand Red Cross Society was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs D. J. Morrowpresiding. Material to be made into garments was handed to members. Several parcels of used clothing were given to be forwarded 1 to the in Christchurch.

LYNDHURST. The first of a series of fortnightly socials organised by the Lyndhurst Social Committee was held in the hall recently. There was a good attendance, visitors being present from the surrounding districts. The prize-win-ners in the competitions were Mrs J. Reesby, Mrs F. Henderson, Mr David Brooker and Mr S. H. Anderson. The women's prizes were given by Mr A. C. Gadd. Music for the dancing was plaved by Mr and Mrs W. Cook and Mr G. Lilley. Mr A. C. Gadd was master of ceremonies.

RUAPUNA. A number of residents gathered in the RuapThia Hall on Wednesday to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs J. Glassey j who are leaving the district. The evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mr and Miss Morris (Hinds), and extras were played by Mrs J. D. King, Miss G. Ross and Mr Lamb. During the supper adjournment Mr R. Lane presented Mr Glassey with a sum of money, and Mrs W. Allan (president of the W.D.F.U.) presented Mrs Glassey with a handbag. A posy cf flowers was handed to her by Noeliiie Tackson.
