WORK FOR TEACHERS
NEW RATIONING SCHEME. SATISFACTION IN ASHBURTON. SCHOOL COMMITTEES' VIEWS. Expressions of satisfaction at the introduction of a new rationing scheme for school teachers were made at the meetings of both the Ashburton Borough School Committee and the Ashburton East School Committee last evening.. That the new system is of benefit to both teacher arid pupil was the general opinion of members. Reporting to the Ashburton Borough Committee, the headmaster (Mr T. B. Haydon) said that the new system would permit of additional teachers being appointed this year and under these conditions Miss Craighead, Miss Jary and Mr Daly would take up positions as additional assistants at the school. ; These additional appointments would be of much assistance in reducing the size of the classes or in -supplying an additional, teacher where it was not advisable to divide a class. Mr A. L. Jones said the new rationing scheme made the position for teachers much more satisfactory.
Mr Haydon agreed. It would be of great benefit, he said, to both ' the teachers and the schools. There would be no changes during the year except if the assistants obtained permanent positions, which was not very likely, he thought. The teachers' salaries were much the same as under the old method of rationing, but they had now to work the whole year, instead of broken periods as in the past. "The new scheme for employing junior teachers should have a good effect on the classes to which they will be posted/' said Mr S. G. Macfarlane (headmaster of the Ashburton East School) in his report to. the Committee.
He added- that he had been advised that the school could secure the services of as many additional assistants as it required." 'Three probationers could be employed at the school with great advantage to all concerned. Members agreed that the system was a much better one than that in operation previously.
