OBITUARY.
MR SPENCER H. GOLLAN. lOnited Tresa Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 29. The former New Zealander, Mr Spencer H. Gollan, was run oyer by a motor 'bus in Oxford Street to-day and was killed. He was in his 74th year. Mr Spencer Herbert Gollan was' the son of Mr Donald Gollan, of Mangatarata ,an'early pioneer, surveyor and engineer. His education took place in New Zealand, Switzerland and Cambridge. As an athlete he came into great prominence, winning events at running, rowing, sculling, swimming, boxing, shooting (gun, rifle and revolver), steeplechasing and billiards. He was twice amateur golf champion of New Zealand, and in England won the Jubilee Vase and the Calcutta,Cup. He was equally successful horse-racing, his principal wins being:—ln New Zealand: Derby, Oaks, St. Leger, New Zealand Cup, Canterbury Cup, Hawke's Bay Guineas, Hawke's Bay Grand National Steeplechase. In. Australia: Sydney Derby and Oaks, All-aged Stakes, Randwick Plate, Melbourne Oaks and St. Leger. In England: With Australian Star, the Sandown Grand Prize, City and Suburban; with Moifaa, the Liverpool Grand National, and many other races with Ebor, Norton, The Bimkin and Saxon. One strange record he made in the rowing world was "to row from Oxford to Putney in a triple-sculled boat in 13hr 56min.His companions were the professionals, Qeorge Towns and Tom Sullivan, and the boat was specially constructed to his orders. He married Miss Erederica Elizabeth Farmer, daughter of Mr Jas. Farmer, M.L.C., of One Tree Hill, Auckland, in 1893. They had two sons and one daughter.
