SWIMMING.

THE ASHBURTON CENTRE. VISITS OF CHAMPIONS. The Ashburton Amateur Swimming Centre met last evening, the chairman, Centre met last evening, the chairman (Mr J CYC. McLachlan), presiding. ■ The Mount Somers Amateur Swimming Club wrote applying for afhlmtioif.to the centre, and requested the centre to draw up a programme or events for a carnival. The application for affiliation was granted, and officials were appointed for the carnival to be held on February 10 Messrs T. L. Crooks and A. Thomson were appointed the centre's delegates to the annual conference of centres at Christchurch on February 20. Mr 6. Day was appointed starter s steward to the centre. . The Otago Swimming Centre advised that T. Tickle, diving champion of New South Wales, and 11. Clark, regarded as the best all-round swimmer in Sydney, had been invited to tour tho South Island. Efforts would be made for the visitors to demonstate to selected school children.' It was decided to hold a centre car-

nival in Ashburton. to mark the visit of the Australians.

Owing, to the proposed visit of Otago swimmers to Asiiburton after the New Zealand championships, the* Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club was granted a change of date for its annual carnival to February 22. The Ruapuna Amateur Swimming Club advised that it would not hold an annual carnival this year, and therefore would not affiliate with the centre.

The 50 yards intermediate boys' centre championship which was to have been decided at the Ruapuna carnival, was held over for allocation at, the next meeting.

The local consul (Mr A. Thomson) reported on the East Ashburton* and Methven' Club's annual carnivals. He advised the Methyen 'Club to obtain the assistance of centre officials for its next annual carnival, and stated that what should have been a successful and' outstanding carnival for the club was spgiled by lack of knowledge on the part of most of the officials.
