ACHIEVEMENT OF PAHIATUA CLUB. 900 CHILDREN TAUGHT. (Per Press Association). PAHIATUA, Jan. 27. What is claimed to be a unique New Zealand record, taking into consideration the size of the population, is held by the Pahiatua Swimming Club which, under its free tuition scheme, has taught oyer 900 children to swim in 21 years. This wonderful achievement has been accomplished by a small band of enthusiasts, who have worked with very slender finances. More children are able to swim in Pahiatua than in other parts of the Dominion. The club president, Mr J. A. Walsh, has held office continuously for 21 years. AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss Joyce Cooper, the British Empire champion woman swimmer, was a passenger in a motor-car which collided with a motor-cycle and side-cai in Military Road, Neutral Bay, New South Wales, while on her way to compete at the State championships at Manly Baths.
