SPRINT RECORDS. DIATOMOUS’S FAST RUN. Only two horses in New Zealand and none in Australia have ever run five furlongs faster than Diatomous went in the Wellington Stakes on Jan. 20. At Ricctorton on November Machine Gun, with 11.5 on his back, won the Randolph Handicap, then five furlongs in 58. This time remained unequalled until March 17, 1927, when Paganelli, carrying 8.8, won the five furlong Plunket Nursery Handicap in 58. The Australian record is 58f. held joinly by Jules Jordan and Triangle, who, singularly enough, both carried 9.12. They each made their time on the fast Cheltenham track of the Port Adelaide Racing Club. The world’s record is 55, by Monastery Garden, with 7.5, at Epsom (England), in May, 1927. The American record is 55 3-5, bv Penrose, with 7.12, at Belmont Park (U.S.A.), in September, 1918. Silver Ring ran his six furlongs in 1.9£. The New Zealand and Australian record is 1.9 2-5, by Silver Scorn at Riccarton last February.
