OBITUARY.

MR T. W. BRUCE. (Per Press Association). HOKITIKA, This Day. Mr Thomas Wanless Bruce died suddenly this morning, aged 72. He was on several occasions Mayor of Ross, and chairman of the Westland County Council. He leaves a widow, two daughters -and two sons. MRS JOSEPH GARRARD. WANGANUI, This Day. Mrs Joseph Garrard, who was in her hundredth year, died in Wanganui the other day. She came to New Zealand 74 years ago, as the young wife of Jjhe chief officer of the ship Airedale, which brought many well-known colonists in her various voyages. Mr and Mrs Garrard settled in Nelson, and were there for 18 years before the death of Mr Garrard. About 20 years ago Mrs Garrard went to the North Island, and for the last 11 years she had been resident with her daughter, Mrs J. R. Sutherland, in Wanganui. She well remembered first sighting land in, New Zealand, and the memory of the six months' dreary trip from Home always lingered. In the midst of her^ birthday celebrations she recalled that all the passengers on. the Airedale believed .that the colony was totally uncivilised. They were surprised at what. they found, but the arrival of refugees ' at Nelson, driven out of Taranaki by Maori wars, was a grim indication of the state of the, country further north. Mrs Garrard retained all her faculties, and in the last year of her life made 120 coat-hangers, which she distributed among relatives. She made a hobby of knitting, and her work had the finish of the old school: There is one son, Mr J: R. Garrard, Wellington, and two daughters, Mrs J. R. Sutherland, Wanganui, and Mrs W. R. Johns, Wellington.

MR JOHN REDMOND. WELLINGTON, January 2. Mr John Redmond, formerly sempr inspector in the Post and Telegraph Department at Wellington, is dead, aged 70. Mr Redmond was born in Waterford, Ireland, in 1863, and arrived in New Zealand in 1874. He joined the Post and Telegraph Department and was stationed at Wanganui, New Plymouth, Hawern, V/averley, Roxburgh and Te Aro. At the time of his retirement he was senior inspector. He is survived by three sous. MR JOSEPH PADDISON. AUCKLAND, January 2. Mr Joseph E. Faddison, of Port'Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island, died yesterday, aged 63. He spent all his life on the'island with which his family has been associated for over seventy years. He was chairman of the County Council for many years, and as proprietor of a boarding-house, was well known to holiday makers.

THE BISHOP OF ELY. (United Press Association— Copynj-ht). LONDON, January 1. The Right Rev. Leonard Jauncey White-Thomson, Bishop of Ely, died at the asp of 70 years, following an illness extending for'several months. He was much affected by the death of his son, who was one of the four Eton College masters who were killed while climbing the Alps in August. Dr. White-Thomson was the son of Colonel Sir Robert White-Thomson. He was ordained in 1891, and was appointed Bishop.of Ely in 1924. He had three sons and a daughter.

MRS H. BRADNEY-VVILLIAMS. TAURANGA, January 2. Mrs H. Bradney-Williams, formerly of Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington, died here during the week-end. She was one of the founders and first vice-presidents of the Canterbury Women's Club, and a member of the committee of the Navy League at Wellington and of the Seatown branch of the Women's National Reserve.
