THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.
Sir, —As a subscriber of some few months standing to our public library, I would like to suggest to those responsible for its upkeep that they call in the City Librarian at Christchurch for advice. Our city fathers have recently seen tit to call in professional advice for our gardens and parks, so why not for such an essential as a, labrary ? Haying travelled all parts of New Zealand, I can safely say that for its population Ashburton has the worst library. I have yet to see a new book on its shelves, not that I doubt some are put there, but whore do they go ? Another point that strikes me' as peculiar is that Saturday is a closed day. Fancy not being opened even for an hour to enable subscribers to get a supply of week-end reading matter. I would like to see some abler pen than mine take this subject up. Thanking you for your valuable space. “SUBSCRIBER.”
