EXAMINATION FEES.

MRS McCOMBS' FIRST REQUEST. (Special to the " Guardian.") CHRISTCHUPCH, This Day. Airs E. R. McCombs, the newlyelected member for Lyttelton, yesterday took action in a matter to which she several times referred to in; her election addresses—the necessity for the payment of a fee of 10s for the senior free place examination by tho children of relief workers and others. She telegraphed to the Acting-Minister for Education (the Hon. J. Bitchener) asking that the fee should be remitted and last evening received a reply from Mr Bitchener saying that he would refer the request of the Hon. R. Masters for urgent consideration as soon as he returned to New Zealand. Mrs McCombs' telegram was as follows : "I would esteem it a favour if you could seo your way to grant my first request, which is that your department should remit the fee of 10s for the senior free place examination to the children of relief workers and others in like circumstances, and that you should permit the acceptance of late entries for that examination."

Last evening Mrs McCombs received the following reply from Mr Bitchener :

" In reply to your telegram re senior free place examination fees:, as the matter is ono of policy I propose bringing it under the motice of the Hon.'R. Masters for urgent consideration immediatelv on his return."
