GOOD ADVANCE IN WOOL. FIRST SALE AT SYDNEY. (United Press Association—Copyright). SYDNEY, August 28. At the wool sales to-day 10,330 bales were offered and 10,099 sold, while 4117 bales were disposed of privately. The market opened with strong and sustained competition from all sections. As compared with the closing sales of June 1, the market showed an advaxice of 30 per cent., whilst, compared with the opening rates of last season, prices showed a rise of about 45 per cent. Excellent clearances were effected. Greasy merino sold up to 19fd. Some particularly attractive clips were submitted. Wools from the west and north-west district of New South Wales generally were much finer than last year, soft in handling,, though shorter in length they* carried less burr, but more dust, due to the need for rain in those areas. Yorkshire was a very strong competitor while France and Japan bought in excellent volume.

TIMARU PRICES SATISFACTORY

TIMARU, August 28

Satisfactory prices, on a par with those obtained in Christchurch last week, ruled at the wool crutching sale heid in Timaru to-day. The total offering was 850 bales, for which a full bench of buyers provided keen competition. Most of the catalogues were cleared.

New Zealand Drug Company this afternoon, an interim dividend of 3* per cent, for the half-year ended July 31 was declared. The rate is the same as that paid last year. , SYDNEY EXCHANGE ACTIVE EFFECT OF IMPROVED WOOL PRICES. SYDNEY, August 28. The strong opening of the new season’s wool sales was reflected in the investment markets to-day pastoral shares showing ii very substantial increase above .the recently advanced rates. Some gold shares also moved up in sympathy with the high price of gold recorded during the week-end. Among these, Bulolo gold, and the parent concern, the Placer development, Mount Morgan, and New Guinea Goldfields, as well as some Westrahan ventures, al touched new high levels.

CLEARING SALE AT METHVEN A successful clearing sale on behalf of Mr G. 11. Hampton, Cracroft, was conducted by the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., yesterday. There was a good attendance of buyers. Prices realised were as follow: — Horses —Agedi mare £3O, five-year-old mare £2B, eight-year-old piare £2/ 10s, eight-year-old gelding £35, aged gelding £l7, seven-year-old mare £33, aged mare £9, nine-year-old gelding £29 10s, unbroken three-year-old gelding £3O 10s.
