AMERICAN MEN’S TOURNAMENT. FINALS OF THE DOUBLES. (■Received This Day, 10.80 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 28. In the finals of the doubles in the men’s national tennis tournament at Chestnut Hills, F. X. Shields and F. A. Barker (United States), defeated H. E. Vines and K. Gledhill (United States) 6-3, 0-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-2. The match G. M. Lott and L. R. Stoeffen (United States) y. A. Quist and D. P. Turnbull (Australia) went 6-4, 1-2 and was postponed.

The latter match commenced under lowering skies. The Australians led 3-1, but their opponents drew level and then went ahead to 5-3.. The Americans

played brilliantly a,t the net and kept the Australians lobbing defensively on the back line. They were set point on Turnbull’s service in the ninth, but the Australians rallied and took the game. They were within a point of breaking Stoeffen’s service in the .tenth to even the score, but the Americans were not to be denied and won the game and the set. After three games had been played in the second set the light became so bad that i,t was decided to postpone the match until to-morrow. It had grown quite dark and rain seemed imminent. PRENN’S REQUEST REFUSED NOT FOR POLAND \ (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) WARSAW-, August 28. The Warsaw correspondent of “The Times” says that D. D. Prenn’s request to be allowed to represent Poland in the tennis tournament on the ground of his Polish birth has ipeen refused by the Polish Tennis Association' because he has hitherto refused to play for Poland, also because he abandoned his nationality to become a German in 1932.
