WINSLOW SCHOOL

CELEBRATION OF JUBILEE, * CEREMONY TO-MORROW. . EARLY SETTLERS RECALLED. It will be 50 years to-morrow since tile Winslow School was opened, and the jubilee will be fittingly marked by celebrations which are to be held at the school. For some time past a committee of residents of the district has been making preparations for the event and it it anticipated that there will be a large attendance of past pupils and former teacher,s and members of the School Committee. The Celebrations will commence at 11 a.m., ■ when ex-pupils will assemble at trio school for an hour’s reunion before lunch. At 1.30 p.m. the school bell will he rung and after the flag lias been unfurled on tlie flagstaff, addresses will be given by Messrs J. H. Robertson - (chairman of the Jubilee Committee), T. D. Burnett, M.P., J. Moore (County Chairman), J. Lattimore (chairman of the School Committee), representatives of the Canterbury Education Board, former chairmen of the School Committee, early teachers and pupils. At- 2.45 p.m. there trill be a roll call and the issuing of jubilee ribbons, and photographs will be taken. Expupils will speak and a jubilee oak will be planted. The afternoon programme will conclude with tea and the cutting of the jubilee cake. A concert and dance will be held in the evening.

The committee responsible for the arrangements is as follows: Messrs J. H. .Robertson (chairman), J. Bell, J. Lattimofe, G. H. Keen, W. R. Keen, J. Melvor, C. Bell, L. Bell, A. Rodd, R. Noble, W. Davison, W. Lowe, R. R. Browne, Mesdames J. Bell and J. McGee. The secretaries are Mrs G. H. Keen and R. Iv. Robertson. Over 540 Pupils Taught. Settlement in the Winslow district was making steady progress fifty years ago, and as more families went to live there it became increasingly apparent that a school Avould have to be built before long. Mr O. Martin interested liimself in the project and he made numerous representations to the Education Board to have a school established.

Eventually, in the winter of 1883, the Board decided to proceed with the work and a wooden building was constructed. On the opening day, August 30, 1883, there were fifteen pupils at the school.

These pupils were as follow: Janp Wilson, Edward Harris, Isabel Martin, Eli,zabeth_ Hayman, Florence Martin, Mary A. Drennan, Anne Grace, Ellen Grace, Matilda Wilson, May Martin, Mary A. Kenniiigton, George Hayman, Thomas Harris, Thomas Grace and Thomas Wilson. Of these, no fewer than seven will attend the celebrations to-morrow.

Since the school was opened, 541 pupils have been enrolled. There has been, a long succession of teachers and their names are set out below.
