(From Our Own Correspondents.) WESTERFIELD. A committee meeting of the Westerfield Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Rifle Club rooms, the president (Mrs Dillon) presiding. Arrangements were finalised for the birthday party to be held in the Westerfield School on August 23. MAYFIELD. A meeting of the Mayfield School Committe was held in the school. There were present Messrs Raymond Oakley (chairman), B. McKay (secretary), J. W. Riley, W. Prouting, and G. W. Harrison. The committee carried a vote of condolence with Mrs M. Murdoch in her recent bereavement. It was decided to write to Mrs and Miss Riley thanking then? for their hospitality on the day of the hare drive and to Mr G. H. Clements for the use of his bus. It was decided to close the school for three weeks en account of an epidemic of mumps in the district, half the children being absent from school. It was decided to reduce the caretaker's salary to £ls. The Loyal Mayfield Lodge, M.U. 1.0.0.F.,*he1d its 32nd anniversary ball on Tuesday evening, there being a. large attendance, including visitors from all parts of the County, Temuka, Geraldine and Thnarti. The N.G. (Bro. E. A. Young and Mrs Young) led the grand inarch. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs I. Watson and Mr Kelman. Music was supplied by Hoare's Orchestra (Temuka) and Miss (!. Ross played an extra. Bro. T. Young was master of ceremonies. RAiTAIA. There was a large attendance in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Tuesday afternoon, when Mr Newman presided over the monthly meeting of the Rakaia Women's Institute. Correspondence was received from Mr Clutha McKenzie of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland, asking the institute to assist in the sale of goods made by the blind. It was decided to get £5 worth of goods and endeavour to dispose of them. A demonstration on cake decoration was given by Mrs Headley Watson. Mrs Watson was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition, a knitted article, was won in the jumper class by Mrs Evison and Miss Newman (equah. In the fancy knitting class Mrs Allan was first. A competition for a pot of marmalade was won by Mrs McAnulty. An amusing play ''The Grand Cham's Diamond" was read. Those taking part were: Mesdames Cooke. Evison, Beattie and Misses E. 1. Newman and M. Lee. The hostesses were Mesdames Bnrnett and Beattie. WILLOWBY. "That the people of this century are happier than those of last century," was the subject of a debate held last evening between the Willowby Mutual Im]>rovement Society and the Baring Square Methodist Young People's Fellowship. There was a large attendance of residents of Willowby and visitors from Ashburton. The home team took the affirmative, the speakers being Mr 11. J. Chapman, Mr H. F. K. Haynian and Mrs R. Pearce, while the negative was debated by Mr H. M. Denton, Miss 0. Watts and Miss D. Fowke for Baring Square. In the summing up, Mr S. G. Macfarlane, who was the adjudicator, gave some very useful information, and declared the affirmative side to be the winners by a few points. At the conclusion of tbc debate, supper was served by members of the Willowby Society. The social promoted by the Willowby Miniature Rifle Club attracted a good attendance. Competitions were Avon by Mrs Wright, Miss D. Dollman and Mr S. Watson. After a dainty supper had been dispensed, the floor was cleared for dancing to music by Mr H. H. Hawkins. Mr J. Sutherland was master of ceremonies.
