BREACH OF PROBATION

ARTHUR WAY SENTENCED. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES. SHOOTING SENSATION SEQUEL. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. Arthur Way, a salesman, aged 53, was charged to-day with having failed to comply with the terms of his release after being convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon, and with having been found unlawfully on enclosed premises at 89 Hackthorne Road, Christchurch. Accused pleaded not guilty, but after evidence on both sides had been heard, the Magistrate said that accused's •failure to comply with the terms of release had been abundantly proved, and he sentenced Way to three months' imprisonment on one charge and to one month's imprisonment on the other, the sentences to be cumulative.

Detective-Sergeant Revell outlined the events which led to Mrs Long injuring accused with a revolver at Christchurch on March 25. Accused, following his being found unlawfully on Mrs Long's premises, was later convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on, the conditions being he should not go near Mrs Long or molest her in any way. Detective Reveli explained that accused had returned to worrying and pestering Mrs Long for money, with the restxrfc that she left Christchurch and took a flat in Wellington. Accused followed and continued pestering her. In evidence, Mrs Long said that she never invited accused to her place. Altogether he had 6btained about £2OO from her. The Magistrate said: "The trouble between these people has already resulted in a shooting affray, and if the man persists in annoying the woman, wo may have a repetition of it."
