COMPULSORY GRADING

OPPOSED BY SHEEPFARMERS. (Special to the " Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Little support for the compulsory grading of wool is given by the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union. A section in the union's annual report, which was adopted last evening, stated that suggestions had been made for the compulsory pooling and. grading of the Dominion wool clip at the four main centres, with a yiew to (making it possible to sell on grade, each grade to be bulked and sold to description). The executive fully ex-, amined the suggestions made, and was definitely of the opinion that grading, such as suggested, would result in increased overhead, and the scrapping of existing facilities for storage and sorting, etc., and that commandeer conditions would require to obtain to make such a scheme practicable. Demands for closer sorting and classing on a bulk handling basis, which promised extra prices, would probably mean higher prices for the special sorts .required, but would possibly mean a lower price per lb for the balance of the fleece resulting in no appreciable rise in the average price for the clip. In the case of small farmers' clips, where adequate sorting facilities were iiot available on the farm, a pooling arrangement was now in operation in most centres, under which, for a small charge, this class of clip could bo properly prepared for market, and provided small clips such as these could be dealt with, it would not be desirable to support any movement having for its object the centralisation of he whole of the Dominion clip at the four main centres as suggested.
