TROTTING AT ADDINGTON. NICOYA SUCCESS. (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club continued its August meeting at Addington yesterday. The weather was fine, and the attendance, although not large before the first race, rapidly grew until it was rather better than that of Saturday. The track was in perfect order, and racing was keen. One of the most spectacular races ever seen on the course was the Avon Handicap, in which an excellent exhibition of trotting was given by the majority of the held. The winner, Nicoya, proved himself a trotter of very high class by his performance, while Huon Voyage, who finished third, registered 4min 24 4-ssee, or only 2 2-ssec slower than his world's race record. Mishaps occurred in the last two events, but fortunately there were not any serious consequences. i Speculation throughout the day was brisk. The sum of £27,120 10s (win £13,500, place £13,620 10s) was invested on the eight events, this amount being an increase of £4582 on the figures of the corresponding day last year (£22,538 10s), and an increase of £9149 on the totalisator receipts on the opening day of the present meeting. Concluding results :—- Avon Handicap (in harness), of 200 sovs; for unhoppled trotters; class 4.39; two miles—l (1) Nicoya 1, 5 (7) Writer 2,2 (2) Huon Voyage 3. Won by a length and a half; half a length separating second and third. Time, 4.29 1-5. Canterbury Handicap (in harness), of 200 sovs; class 4.35 to 4.28; two 11 (11) Master Roy 1, 4 (2) Tactless 2, 13 (13) Somerby 3. Won by two lengths; a length between second and third. Time, 4.30 3-5. Speedway Handicap (in harness), of 200 sovs; class 2.44; one mile and a quarter—l (1) Glenrossie 1, 4 (4) Free Advice 2, 7 (7) Great Logan 3. Winooka arrived at the Longacre track from San Francisco on Tuesday night, accompanied by his stable-mate Trevallion. Both were in splendid condwition. The New Zealand horse, Tea Trader, is also present for races during the week-end against the best sprinters. Tea Trader has been out of training for more than two months, because of a bruised heel, but during the last three weeks has responded to work in fine style. The trainer says the horse will be ready for a good race. AUSTRALIAN ASCOT MEETING SYDNEY, August 9. At the Ascot races the following was the result of the THREE-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP, Of 180 sovs. Six furlongs. Safari, 7.9 (Stead) 1 Semak, 7.9 {Parsons) 2 Bica, 9.0 (Bartie) 3 Eight started. Won. by a length; half a length'between second and third. Time, 1.17 J. Safari's owner, Mr W. Higgins, who arrived at the week-end by the Wanganella, saw the race. The welter mile was won by Prince Pombal, a. former New Zealand horse, which hitherto has not won here. VALLEY MEETING. MELBOURNE, August 9. At the Moonee Valley races the following was.the result of the BOURNFIELD PARK HANDICAP, Of 150 sovs. Six furlongs. Good Hunting, 8.0 (Reed) 1 Kaoota, 8.12 (Shannon) ... 2 Flying Empress, 7.6 3 Twelve started. Won by half a neck ; three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 1.16 J. This was Reed's first ride since he was injured last May.
