Two men, Mr Harold Drummey, aged 30, and Mr Thomas Stewart, aged 23, were killed while inspecting a well near Nyngan. The timbers lining the walls collapsed and torrents of sands engulfed them. The fatality occurred about 100 feet from the surface. Mr Stewart was completely buried by the first fall, and Mr Drummey was buried to the waist. Desperate efforts were made to rescue the latter, but he finally disappeared under a huge rush of sand. A third man had just left the well when the accident occurred.
