DEER AND CHAMOIS.
AN EVER-INCREASING MENACE. r ROYAL COMMISSION SOUGHT. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, August 4. The damage to New Zealand rorests by red deer, thar, and chamois was described by members at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Forestry League as an ever-increasing menace. The following resolution was carried: — "That in view of the vital importance of the preservation of the Dominion's forests, particularly in the high lands, to prevent floods and the erosion of the wealth-producing lands of the plains, and having regard to the difference of opinion that exists about the destruction. of these forests by plant-eating animals, the Government be urged to set up a Royal Commission of, say, three men versed in forest matters, to report on this extremely urgent question."
