LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” April 7, 1883.) Property Assessment Court.—Messrs J. Grigg (chairman), J. Inglis, and W. C. Walker sat as a. Board of Reviewers last week at the Courthouse, Ashburton, when objections to the Borough, Upper Ashburton, and Longbeach districts were heard and adjudicated upon. The Borough roll was passed with some trifling alterations. The other district rolls were referred back to headquarters in Wellington, owing to errors committed by the central government and the assessors. Ashburton Cheese for England. — The “British King,” which leaves Lyttelton for England to-day, has a halfton of Ashburton cheese on board for London, consigned by the Cheese. and Butter Factory as a trial shipment. Two cheeses have been placed in the frozen chamber of the vessel, four cases in the hold with the general cargo, and four cases placed under the immediate charge of the purser, -who has undertaken to take every care and turn them periodically during the voyage. Arrangements have been made to cable the condition of the parcels on arrival. Naturally there is some little interest manifest in the probable result, but it is thought by some people that the consignment sent in the frozen chamber will turn out a failure, but that sent as general cargo will arrive in good condition.
