MARCH QUARTER FIGURES. INCREASE IN CASES TRIED. An increase in the number of both civil and criminal cases tried is shown in ,the Ashburton Magistrate's Court returns for the quarter ended March 31, 1933, compared with the figures for the corresponding quarter in 1932. There was, however, a, large decrease in the amount sued for compared with the same period last year, the difference being £BSO _9s 9d. Particulars are as follow, the figures for the same quarter in 1932 being given in parentheses:—' Sittings presided over by a Magistrate—Civil 6 (5).; criminal 6 (5); by Justices of the Peace (civil) 6 (5); criminal 12 (8); totals 12 (10), 13 (18); civil cases tried, Magistrate 3 (3); Justices of the Peace 2 (0); totals 5 (3) • criminal cases tried, males 70 1(68), females 13 (4): total 83 (72); plaints entered 159 (164); distress warrants issued 12 (10)"; judgment summonses 22 (26); warrants of committal 2 (0); writs of .arrest 0 (0); summonses' served by bailiff within one mile 78 (71), outside one mile 37 (65); warrants executed by bailiff 8 (9); civil summonses served bv registered post 62 (62) • civil fees paid £l6O 9s 9d (£137 3s); criminal fees £74 15s (£l7 10s); fines £35 7s 6d (£3B 7s 6d); total £2lO Is 6d (£193 Is); amount sued for £1638 4s 5d (£2488 14s 2d), recovered £522 7s 8d ((£1298 17s 2d). During the quarter, 38 miners' rights were issued by the Mining Registrar at Ashburton, compared with 43 last year.
