Owing to the Avet afternoon the attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute Avas small and most of the business, including an account of the work of the federation, to be given by the Staveley president (Airs Alan Russell) was held over until next- meeting. It Avas decided that the local institute should send a Christmas gift of butter to its English link at Ravensthorpe, Northampton. Mrs L. G. There was a fair attendance at the opening of the jYlavfield Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon, but play was suspended on account of a shoAver. After afternon tea Avas served Air J. Murdoch thanked all who helped to make the previous season a success and extended to all intending members and visitors a hearty Avelcome. As a wind-up to the season and to mark the occasion of their success in Avinning the junior competition of the Ashburton Rugby Union, the Alount Somers Football Club held a highly successful bait in the Memorial Hall on Friday evening, at Avhicli representatives of the Ashburton Rugby Union and Ashburton Referees’ Association and members of sister clubs in the County Avere present. The committee, under Air J. B. Pratt as chairman, and Mr G. AY r . Smith as lion, sec, is to he congratulated upon the success of the function. The ballroom Avas gaily decorated with evergreens, flowering shrubs and streamers of black and yellow (the club’s colours), ivitli shaded lights to tone. The union was ahvays delighted to see the country teams come out victorious, as they encountered'many difficulties miknoAvn to town teams, especially in training matters. A grand concert was held in the Hinds Hall on Saturday evening in aid of the school piano fund. Air Horne’s party travelled from Christchurch and presented a clever and entertaining programme.
