THE GALA

CONCLUDING RESULTS. COOD ATTENDANCE AT NIGHT. Scenes of gaiety marked the continuation of the Gala on the Domain Oval on Saturday evening, and a large attendance of the public kept all side-shows going strong until a late hour. The evening was fine but chilly, and the programme of axemen’s events, which was the chief item, was through very successfully. Brisk business was done by all the showmen, who certainly did their best to encourage the onlookers to join in the fun. There were some 20 sideshows and stalls in all. The miniature train caused a great deal of inteiest, and was well patronised, as was also the Ferris wheel. In fact, all the amusements received good patronage on Saturday evening. Raising funds to enable the Advance Ashburton Association to continue its work of beautifying various parts of the town, is the object of holding this annual Gala Day, and it is estimated that the Association will benefit considerably as a result of Saturday s effort.

Some excellent chopping was seen, in the axemen’s events, and all four of these were keenly contested. Good entries made the events most interesting from the spectator’s point of view, and the special lighting left nothing to he desired.

Gross receipts totalled £404 17s on Saturday, which sum includes £lls 13s 6d taken at the gates and £IOO Os 3d from the sale of surprise packets. Together with the £ll7 17s 5d taken on Monday, the total for the two days was £522 14s sd. This result is considered quite satisfactory, in view of the necessity of postponing the function and the other difficulties experienced by the promoters.
