LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 29, 1882.) Ashburton; C.C. v. Borough C.C.— A match between The above teams wds played on the Domain ground yesterday. There was not time to finish a two innings match, and taken on the first innings of each team, the Ashburton Club sceured an easy victory. The playing of Pixley right throughout the first innings was very good, and Tie carried his bat for a carefully played innings of 21 runs. In the early part of the game he gave an easy chance to Andrews, which was not taken advantage of, and with this exception, Fixley’s play was very careful and steady. With the exception of A. Fooks and Field, no other batsmen of the Ashburton. Club did much. Hosken bowled well, and succeeded in taking seven men out of the Ashburton’s first innings. For the Borough Club, Johnson succeeded in getting 10 runs before he was caught by Simpson. The following are the scores:—Ashburton C.C.; First innings—Pixley not out 21, A. Fooks 8, Simpson 1, Curtis 0, Hbgg 1, Gundry 2, E. Fqoks 1, F. Fish 2, Field 9 a Zander 0, Denshire 5, extras 13, total 63. Second innings—Simpson 7, Denshire 3, Pixley 0. A. Fooks 4, Hogg 3, Curtis not out 12, Field?. 1, E. Fooks 2, Fish not out 3, extras 9, total for seven wickets 44. Borough C.C.— First innings—Amos 0, G. Andrews 0, L. F. Andrewes 0, Johnston 10, Hosken 5, C. R. Andrews 0, A. Andrews 0, . Purchase 3, Davis not out 4, Davison 0, Dee 0, extras 11, total 33.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian, - ” Oct. 29, 1907.) Wakanui 1 Presbyterian Sunday School.—The social in aid of the Wakanui Presbyterian Sunday School library fund was a great success, there being a large attendance. The Ilev. G. B. Inglis occupied the chair. A good programme was given by the scholars, assisted by a few friends, the following taking part:—Recitations, Willie Lundy, Grace Roulston, Gladys Cromie, Annie Amos, Leslie Doak, Annie Cromie, and IVJr H. Butteriek; dialogue, Annie Cromie and Jack Doak; songs, Misses Davidson,, B. Moore, Jessie Cochrane, Masters Lane and Joe Cairns, and Mr Ofwen Trevurza; pianoforte solos, Misses M. Cochrane and Annie Lundy; duet, Jessie Cochrane and Muriel Cromie. A quartet was given by Misses Corbett and Wilson and Messrs Trevurza and Corbett. The prizes were then distributed. Ashburton A. and P. Association.— A meeting of the general committee of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held tins afternoon. Present: Messrs T. E. Upton (president), and A. E. Hart, T. Mawson W. J. Silcock, T. Blackley, T. Taylor, L. W. Blunden, Jas, Bruce, James Small, J. Choak, C. Reid, F. Frampton, W. Drummond, Jas. Allen, Jas, Hampton, and VV. Anderson. Mr Small, on behalf of the Horse Sub-Committee, reported in regard to the_ arrangements made for Pony Trottiim Handicap and Young Farmers’ Judging Class. In regard to the latter, it had been decided that a committee consisting _of the _ marshals, the president, the vice-president, and the secretarv should make the awai’d. On behalf of the Grounds Committee, Mr Mawson reported that preparations for the show were very well torward—much more so than in previous years.
