SCENIC ACCESS.

TE ANAU-MILFORD ROAD. (Special to the “Guardian.”) DUNEDIN, Oct. 28. The Te Anau-Milford road is gradually approaching the Hollyfoid Valley, which is described by the Engm-eer-in- Chief of the Public Works Department (Mr F. W. Furkert) being finer than the famous Grand Canybn in Colorado. Fifty miles of road have now been completed, and 23 miles have yet to he constructed before Milfoi’d is reached. The road is now skirting the shores of Lake Gunn, and by the time a further distance of four miles has been completed Lakes Fergus and LocliTel will have been passed. Two miles further on the Hollyford \ alley will be entered, and the next eight miles of road will provide a drive which will be one of the finest in Lie world. Cars will pass' between enfts rising 4000 to 5000 feet, the peak? above them being from 7000 to 8000 feet high. Some idea of the nature of the country is given by the fact that, while the peaks rise a mile and a half into the air from the bed of the valley, their highest points are not more than two miles apart. Avalanches are constantly falling over the cliffs in the spring. The scenery in the Cleddau Valley, through which the road will pass before Milford is reached, is of a similar type. Among the peaks which will come into view on the last stretches of the road are Tutoko (9042 ft), Christina (8210 ft), and Lippe (7300 ft). When the road has been carried a few miles further than the point where the men are working at present it will ling up with the bridge track to Elfin Bay, Lake Wakatipu. Hbrses are available, at the end of tlie road, and it is anticipated that a number m "sightseers will undertake rides into the surrounding country during the summer.
