SMITH LIBEL CASE.

CAUSE OF FIRE IN THE CAR. EVIDENCE GIVEN 1 BY EXPERTS. (United Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY .October 27. Donald Harkness, giving evidence in "Wizard" Smith's suit for damages for alleged libel, furnished theories concerning the cause of the lire in Smith's car, but the only conclusion he formed was that some foreign substance had caused it. Eire could be deliberately caused with a petrol-soaked rag, for with tbe engine running there would be no difficulty in picking up a spark and igniting the rag. Norman Josephson, consulting engineer, said it was not possible to cause a. fire in the manner suggested by the plaintiff, Smith. Witness expressed the opinion 'that the fire could have been caused ,y loosening the clip of the petrol supply line allowing the petrol to ooze out slowly and igniting it by a spark from one of the plugs.
