UNEMPLOYED RELIEF

ACTIVITIES IN ASHBURTON. THE STAND-DOWN WEEK. . * FIFTEEN BOYS REGISTERED. Tlie Ashburton Local Unemployment Committee met this afternoon, the Deputy-Mayor (Mr R. Kerr) presiding. The certifying officer (Mr J. P. Hanratty) reported that the total amount involved in connection with the No. 10 (building) Scheme was £7323 12s, of which £2426 5s represented labour. A total of 26 men were employed.

Mr W. Paterson said that 15 boys had been registered to date .as unemployed, but he had not been able to place any as yet. He had had an inquiry for one boy. As the wet weather had prevented some of the men from completing their allotment of work during the last day or two, it. is the intention of the committee to let them finish this off during the stand-down week, next week. This position was provided for under the conditions laid down by the Unemployment Board.

Fourteen applications for men under the No. 4 scheme were received from farmers. Twelve were granted, one was granted for gorse grubbing, and one to the end of November.

Applications for relief work were dealt with as follow:—Six were granted, two were granted work under No. 10 scheme only, and one was referred to the certifying officer. A woman in Tirnaru wrote asking if the amount of a maintenance claim upon a local unemployed worker could be obtained from Iris relief wages. It was decided to reply that 'an attachment order must be obtained through the Court. An appeal by the New Zealand Workers’ Union on behalf of a destitute worker who had been incapacitated was held over for further inquiry.
