FOOTBALL.

CANTERBURY BEAT AUCKLAND. RANFURLY SHIELD RETAINED. CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. Canterbury successfully defended the Ranfurly Shield against Auckland, winning by 14 points to nil. Canterbury were a much improved side, giving an incomparably better display than they made against South Canterbury a week ago. The Auckland forwards to-day were always a hardworking pack, and with their advantage in weight they were able to secure the ball from most of the scrums for their backs, but they had not the same vim and precision in open play as the Canterbury pack. Corner did his work behind the serum admirably, but the Auckland inside backs showed little dash or resource, and were much inferior to their immediate opponents. It was in this department of play that Auckland failed. In set scrums during the game Auckland secured the ball 25 times t<s Canterbury’s 19. They also were definitely'superior in opening play from the line-outs, but the Canterbury forwards were faster, more active and alert, and more sure tacklers than the visitors. Behind the Canterbury scrum, the five-eighths ran straight and had more penetration than the Auckland men. Superior tactics made the whole Canterbury back division far the more dangerous side when in possession of the ball. Ibe match was played in perfect weather, before 12,000 people. Canterbury won the toss, and Auckland kicked off against the sun. The success of Auckland in early scrums did not augur well for Canterbury, but play had been in progress 25 minutes before any score came, and the first try was Canterbury’s. Canterbury, who had been on the defensive for most of the early part of the game, had carried a daring attack to Auckland territory, when Hazlehurst was stopped only a few yards from the line. Repulsed on this occasion, Canterbury came hack with more dash. The ball was whipped out to Hart, who fended off three opponents and dived over at the corner. Roberts failed to goal. Canterbury 3 Auckland 0

Ten minutes later, Roberts kicked a beautiful penalty goal from the twentyfive yards line, about eight yards from touch. Canterbury 6 Auckland , 0 This was the half-time score. Soon after opening the second spell, Cottrell dashed over the goal-line with three opponents hanging on to him, and the ball was ruled as held. Soon Canterbury were attacking again, but Auckland kept them a£ bay for 15 minutes. From a scrum a few yards from the Auckland line, the Canterbury forwards heeled smartly. Bouterey went solo on the open side of the scrum and was yards over the line before anyone touched him. Roberts goaled. Canterbury 11 Auckland ... • •• 0 After 35 minutes of the second spell had gone, Canterbury scored a clear-cut try. King made tlie opening, and passed to Innes, who burst away from one tackier and ran to Bush. Brown swerved inside him and took an in pass which left hiiA racing for the line unopposed. Roberts missed with the kick. The game ended without further score. Canterbury 14 Auckland 0 ASHBURTON v. CANTERBURY B.

Canterbury ( 5 Ashburton 3 Flewellyn and Thompson were in tui'n dispatched down the side-line in long runs, hut neither of the wings had quite the pace or cleverness to beat Behrnes, whose tackling was splendid. The Ashburton forwards, however, were very hard to stop when following the ball in the open paddock. . Another of their loose rushes sent Mulhern over at the corner. The half-time score was:— Ashburton 6 Canterbury 5 Early in the second half Thompson was sent down the left-wing again, but Noble was the only man backing up, and the in-pass,, a few yards from the line, was not collected.
