FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” August 1, 1882.) Complimentary.—The following flattering letter has been tendered to Mr Thomas Quill:—“New Zealand International Exhibition, Christchurch. My dear Sir,—Prior to leaving Christchurch, and now that the New Zealand international Exhibition is closed, and we are both about leaving to return to our respective homes, I wish ±o express to you my thanks for the way you have managed the catering and bar business of this large undertaking. Your venture, like ‘ours,’ was a 'bold one—and you paid a high price for the privileges you bought. I hope and trust the venture has paid you. Tins you may safely reckon at all events, namely, having given entire satisfaction to a large number, if not all, who hav.e visited the exhibition. Wishing you every prosperity—l remain, My Dear Mr Quill, yours truly. Jules Joubert.”

Railway Tariff.—A public meeting was held in the Town Hlafl, Ashburton, on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of securing an expression of opinion on the present railway tariff. The meeting was convened by Mr W. C. Walker (chairman of the County Council), who occupied the chair There was not a large attendance. The chairman called on Mr John Grig 2 to move the first resolution. Mr Grigg then came forward and moved—“'That- the present railway charges on agricultural produce are excessive, and that a substantial reduction should be granted. Mr Grigg outlined the importance of the matter to the settler, and Mr C. W. Purnell seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Cox read a long petition to the Government, asking for a reduction in tariff, and moved: “That the petition read be adopted for .presentation to Parliament and that the chairman be authorised to sign same on behalf of the meeting. Mr M. Stitt seconded the motion, which was carried. The Hounds.—The hounds met at Tinwald on Thursday, but the sport was much interfered with by the wire fences, which at one stage or another brought almost every horseman to grief. Fortunately there was no serious accident. The next- meet, the last of the season, will be at the Gasworks on Thursday next. t TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 1, 1907). Amos, Brophy, and M. Friedlander. Baptist Young Men’s Class.—The Baptist Young Men’s Class met on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance and Air A. Silcock occupied the chair. The subject for the evening was a debate on the question, “Should Ashburton be lit by gas or electricity?” Air Aleddins, supported by Air Loy, spoke for gas. and Mr Ager, supported by Air L. Greenslade, for electricity. Each speaker .dealt very exhaustively with the subject and a livelv discussion followed, each member taking part. . On a vote being taken the meeting decided in favour of gas by a majority of two.
