LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From “The Guardian,” June 13,1881.)

Flood at Water ton.—The township of Waterton on Saturday and Sunday presented a most pitiable sight. The large drains lately made by tne Council Had the effect of bringing down the storm-water at such a rapid, rate that it threatened destruction to property. The outfall was inadequate to cany off the volumes of water, which consequently overflowed the unfortunate township to suolii an extent that it soon surrounded several dwellings. At the blacksmith’s shop work had to be suspended. The public store and post office had to be reached on horseback. At the hotel tlie water was kept out of the house, but the stable was flooded. In one of the resident’s houses the water stood four inches deep. A. and P. Association. —A meeting of thie committee of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held to-morrow afternoon at the Commercial Hotel to consider the advisability of holding a ploughing match. It is noticeable that several of these matches, which used to; be regular annual events in the various districts, have of late dropped into disuse. Several agriculturists having expressed a desire that such a ; match should be retained in this district. The meeting of the society’s committee has been called to take the subject into consideration.

There a. fair attendance, and it was decided to form a club. Mr A. Shannon was elected secretary, and was instructed to send a challenge to Dromore players to play a euchre match at Chertsey.
