During a- heavy snowstorm the steamer Hera, of 1080 tons, ran ashore at the cliffs near Hamnierfest, the northernmost town in Europe, and was pounded to pieces. An officer swam ashore with a life-line, and 56 passepgers and crew were saved. Six were drowned. The survivors staggered into a village after a terrible march across mountains' and ice in the snowstorm, in which another man died.
