PRISON BURNED
SET ON FIRE BY CONVICTS. RIOTOUS MOB OF 1600 MEN. DISTURBANCE IN ILLINOIS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 18. A message from Joliet (Illinois) states that within an hour after a howling mob of 1600 convicts had set lire to the new Statesville Prison today, they ran riot for upwards of an hour. Etate militiamen quelled the disturbances. Seven buildings were destroyed, the loss being estimated at £60,000. Four convicts were wounded, and three guards beaten.
