FIFTY YEARS SYNE. - - i-. v. (From “The Guardian” Mar 19, 1881). Borough By-laws.—A special meeting of tne Borough Council Avas held yesterday to consider alterations and additions to tiie by-laws. The members present were:— His Worship the Mayor, Os. St. Hill, Friedlander, Robinson, Williamson and Parkin. It was reached that alterations and additions already considered should! be put- into force and a special meeting be held on May 2, to conform the resolution. Ashburton Fire Police—A meeting of tliis Corps to elect officers, Avas held last night at the Borough Council Chamoers, Mr George Jameson presiding. Officers ejected Avere:— Captain, Mr R. Friedlander; Lieutenants, Messrs Jameson and Woods. , The folloAving gentlemen’s names Avere taken to act as a volunteer lire Police and Slilva ge Corps:— Messrs R. Friedlander, G. Jameson, Wood, A. Harrison, G. P. Cox. Shurv, S. E. Poyntz, W. R. Boyle, C. ’St. Hill, T. R. Hodder, WV H. Gundry, W. H. Zouch and H. Stephenson. Industrial Exhibition.—The exhibition will be opened by the Governor at 1 p.m. on Thursday next. Ticket holders will be admitted when the Governor has passed through the hall and is viewing the exhibits in tents. The gallery avill be specially reserved for the accommodation of ladies.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “The Guardian” Mar 19, 1906). Ashburton Mounted Rifles. —The annual meeting of the Ashburton Mounted Rifles was held on Tuesday when Captain Studholme occupied the chair. Captain Studholme stated that with the exception of unpunctuality! on (parades the year had been a most satisfactory’ one, both as; to work done-and as to shooting. Mr -H. E. Blunden was unanimously elected-second lieutenant. After discussion it was decided to adopt- a dress uniform, selection to be left to the Finance Committee. (Captain Studholme, Lieutenants Hardy, and Blunden, Sergeant-Major Gibson and Quarter-Master Sergeant Christian. i.fvt. V: Personal Mr William Brown v or Wakanui, who has been a resident in the colony’ for nearly 44 years, intends leaA’ing for a- trip to the Old Country on Tuesday Aveek. ■ ; - Baptist Sunday School Anniversary. —The anniversary services in connection with the Ashburton Baptist Sunday school were held on Sunday, the Rev. J. C. Mavrin of Spreydon, preaching at all services. Mr Martin spoke especially’ to the children and in the afternoon 'distributed the prizes gained during the year. Under the baton of Mr E, Tucker, the children sang the Anniversary hyunns. 1
