ORGANISATION OF RELIEF. 'LOCAL BODY CO-OPERATION. (Special to “The Guardian.”) WELLINGTON, March 18. “Local bodies and local committees in many districts are co-operating very heartily with the Unemployment Board in its efforts to relieve unemployment,” stated the chairman of the Board (the Hon S. G. Smith) to-dav, “and the success that has attended' the operations of Schemes 4A and 5 is largely; due to the efficient fielp of these -bodies, the members of which are giving completely gratuitous services. “The willingness of the members of these bodies to devote a considerable amount of time in organisation and supervision in connection with the Board's relief schemes has been a most gratifying experience, and fruitful of much benefit to the unemployed. “The magnitude of this free service is shown in the figures regarding Scheme 5. Since its inception on February 9, the estimated amount involved in various works all over New Zealand is €122,807. For the Aveek ended March 14, 23,013 men Avere given work. The details are as follows: Single men (two days) . . . 8704 Three-day men 6674 Four-day men 7635 “This work has required a great deal of organisation on the part of the members and officials of local bodies, blit it has been cheerfully done as their contribution to ilie important task of unemployment relief. “One of the organisers in the Bouth Island is reported in the newspapers as having stated:— ‘The percentage of men Aylio have not yet been placed in work under the respective schemes is about 1 per cent of the total number of registered unemployed. We aim at getting 100 per cent, employed, and there seems no reason why this should not, be achieved if each body is prepared to co-operate to its fullest extent.’ ” “With such a spirit as this prevailirg.” added the Minister, “the hoard considers tl at tlic portion can be faced with confidence.”
