FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From "The Guardian" Mar; 18. 1881). The Industrial Exhibition.—The three tents intended as annexes to the main Exhibition in the Town Hall,Shave been erected, and goods are rapidly arriving. At a meeting of the management committee last night, it was resolved that the Mayor be requested to apply to the Government for a site for museum purposes at the corner of Burnett and Cass Streets, The following provisional museum committee was appointed; Messrs H. Friedlander, Bullock. Jameson and Passmore. A decoration committee, consisting of Messrs Wood, G. Compton and -Mayo, was appointed. Football.—A meeting of those interested in the formation of a football club in the Ashburton district will-be held at Quill's Hotel on Saturday evening. The Grain Traffic—The following is a return of the grain traffic on the Christchurch-Amberley section of the railway for the past week, f standing for "forwarded," and h for "on hand". Monday, 13,621 f, 10,836 h; Tuesday, 19,168 f, 9,715 h: Wednesday, 19,477 f, 13,015 h; Thursday, 17,727 .f, 17,344 h; Friday, 22,661 f, 19,283 h; Saturday, 15,464 f, 18,589 h. Obstruction of Traffic—Both the afternoon and evening trains from the South arrived an hour late yesterday, in consequence of the heavy wind blowing and the obstruction caused by the immense grain traffic. , ,»
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "The Guardian," Mar 18. 1906). Old Boys' Football 'Club.—The annual meeting of the Old Boys' Football Club was held last evening when there were about 20 members present. The following officers,were elected: PatrOii, Mr D. Thomas; president, Rev. E. Whitehouse; vice-presidents, Messrs Hodgkins, Hillier, Christian, J. Bruce, Watters, R. Shearman, Snodgrassy R. D. Dansey, and T. F. Gibson : captain Mr E. Orr; vice-captain, Mr L. Hardy; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Bushell ; Union, delegate, Mr J. B. Christian ; committee, Messrs D. C. Thomas, H. Hair P. Orr, and W. Anderson, and the captain, vice-captain and secretary. Mr R. J. Dansey was elected an honorary life member.
Technical Classes.—A special meeting of the Ashburton Technical Classes Committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, (in the chair), Rev. G. B. Inglis, Mefesrs W. H. Collins, C. Reid and J. ftleLeod (secretary). The meeting was called for the purpose of considering a letter received from the Board of Education stating that the Board had received a letter from the Department nointing out that the payment of the grant of £l5O is conditional on the Technical School being vested either in the Education Board or the High School Board, according as the former or the latter is the controlling authority It was decided to leave the mat- i te'r to Messrs W. H". Collins, McGregor j and McLeod.
