EWE AND RAM F AIR

PRICES AT METHVEN.

ABSENCE OF FOUR-YEAR-OLD EWES. HIGHEST THIS YFAK, FOR FINE WOOLS. The annual ewe and ram fair was held in the Methven Saleyards yesterday before a. very large attendance of buyers. The total yarding of ewes was close on 13.0C0, about 6000 less than Jas;t year. The fair was responsible for at least two outstanding features, one being a record of values for fine-woolled sheep for any fair so far this season, while the other was the entire absence of four-year-old ewes from any of rlie Bakaia Gorge runs. These sheep have always been a feature of the Methven Fair, commanding a ready sale to farmers for stocking up. However, there was a good number of outside sheep, for which, in common with the rest of the yarding, there was good competition. The general average of sheep was good, and the t,one of the market- throughout was buoyant. Practically every lino was sold at auction* and before business closed a. complete clearance vas effected.

A line of 206 2-tooth Corriedale ewes sold on behalf of Mr H. J. Freeman, Highbank, at 19s Gd, is a record for any oav© fair this season. They were big upstanding sheep of nice quality.

'in threoquarter-breds the best pen was that offered on account Mr A. F. Marr, Methven, of 175 2-tooths, making 17s. These were nice quality sheep. In view"" of the present state of the sheep market, the result of the Fair can. only be regarded as a most satisfactory one. Vendors were prepared to accept the conditions as they came which, collided with the reassuring prices in the wool market, gave a stimulating tone to the sale. In the ram section there were some nice pens on offer. Among several outstanding lots were those ]X'-nned by Mr 1 S. Aicken, whoso entry of 2i oneshear Southdowns made the satisfactory average, of 3| guineas. In English LciVestors, Messrs McDonald Bros.' average for Ll was 4 guineas. Mr M. M. Macale, another local breeder of Southdowns, also secured up to 4 guineas, while Border Leicesters realised up to the same figure.
