CADET RiFLE SHOOTING. THE HIGH SCHOOL COMPANY. The Victory Shield for competition among Secondary School Cadets of the South Island for rifle shooting was presented to the Ashburton High School Cadets, who have won the trophy this year, by ‘ Major A. B. Williams, D. 5.0.. Acting Senior Officer Canterbury Regimental District, at the Drill Hall this afternoon, i Major Williams spoke briefly on the purpose of the cadet corps, and outlined the hist aryl of the shield. The late Captain McKee, of Christchurch, he said, had obtained a ; piece of copper from Lord Nelson’s Victory, Jind had persuaded the late Mr G. G. Stead to have it made into a shield for a shooting competition among cadet companies. The competition bad originally been confined to the North Canterbury District, but in 1921, with the consent of Mr Stead’s executors, the trophy had been allotted to the Secondary Schools of the South Island. In presenting the shield to Lieutenant R. M. McGregor, on behalf of the Company, Major Williams mentioned that the suield had been previously won by Ashburton in 1913, and expressed the hope that this would not be the last time the school would win it. Replying, Lieutenant McGregor thanked Major Williams, on behalf of the school, .for coming down to make the presentation. It was, he remarked, the ambition of every cadet in the school to gain a place in the Victory shield team. Concluding, ho said the company would do its utmost to retain the trophy. To-day is the concluding day of the annual barracks, and this morning the senior boys were engaged in their .303 shooting, while the remainder were doing distance judging. This afternoon the boys are concluding the tabloid sports-meeting commenced yesterday.
