FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “The Guardian” Mar 13, .1881) Lecture.—On Thursday evening the Rev. A. AY. Hands delivered a lecture on the revision of the Bible at the Ashburton Institute. The lecturer spoke of the opposition once made to tlie revision of the old Latin Bible by Jerome and of the opposition .to the revision of the Bible now held so sacred. It was hoped, he said that tlie * newly revised version about to be published might win its right place through ' its intrinsic merit rather .than by the strong hand of authority. After the lecture a collection was made for the expenses oh the hall, lighting and printing. The surplus of the funds to be giyen to the Uld Men’s Home to buy tobacco. Cricket.—The Ashburton team- selected to play against Geraldine on Tuesday comprises the following:— G. and A. Andrews, A. Amos, Hodder, Denshire, AVix, Jephson, Fooks, Groves, Fagan and Spury. They will leave 1$ the first train south and commence play immediately on arrival. , Ashburton Horticultural Society.— > The meeting to arrange matters in connection with the show '"took place on Thursday evening where there was a good attendance. The hon. secretary (Mr Poyntz) reported that there was abdut £69 to the credit of the society and this with £ll which was paid in the room and some £lO yet to collect made a total of £BO. .The total receipts from the show Had been about £6O and the expenditure £SO.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO. ‘ ’ ■ (From “The Guardian” Mar 13, 1906). Personal—Corporal McElrea ; (Ashburton Rifles), arrived back.in Ashburton from the.Trentham Rifle Meeting by the second express this afternoon. Mr Thomas Harrison, late of Hackthorne, who has beeh on a trip to England, also arrived by the same train. Entertainment—There was a fair attendance at the Baring Square Church last night, when the Rev. E. P. Blamires, of Rotorua, gave a number of recitations in which the pathetic, humorous and descriptive, were skilfully blended. The Rev. A. Pieters presided and 1 vocal solos by Miss M. Rattray and Mr 6. Carson, with an organ solo by Miss Eva, Jones added to the evening’s enjoyment. Presentation.—Master L. H. Steel, who* for the past three years has been connected with the Ashburton Post Office as telegraph messenger and has been promoted to the Training Gallery at Oamaru was presented this morning by the Postmaster (Mr R. D. Dansey), on behalf of the s.taff, with a leather travelling bag.
