CHARGES AMENDED

ALLEGED THEFT OF LIQUOR.

FOUR CASES AGAIN ADJOURNED. WARRANT FOR ONE ARREST ISSUED., The final of a series of adjournments in connection with the arrest of four men on charges of alleged theft of liquor was made ip, the Ashburton Police Court this morning, when three of the men appeared before Mr R. Clark, J.P. William Thomas Angus, aged 48, John Angus, aged 32, James Angus, aged 30, and John Grice, aged 31, were charged with, having, on or about February 23, broken and entered by night the warehouse of Frank Leslie Courts, and stolen therefrom a quantity of liquor valued at £lB 2s, the property of F. L. Courts.

Air L. A. Charles appeared for John andi James Angus, Air W. H. Woods for Grice, and Air G. C. Nicoll for W. T. Angus. { All had been on release on bail, but Grice did not appear in Court. Senior-Sergeant H. Martin said he would withdraw the breaking and entering charges, and substitute others. W. T. Angus was charged with having received stolen, goods, and the others were charged with having stolen liquor. Senior-Sergeant Martin asked for a. remand till to-morrow morning, when accused would appear before the Alagistrate. Accused James, John and W T. Angus were released l on bail of £IOO each. Mr Woods said filial Grice’s non-ap-pearance was probably due fio some misunderstanding. The Bench said the position was an awkward one, and he did not desire to issue a warrant for his arrest. It was stated that Grice had _ been seen in town earlier in the rhorning. The Court was adjourned for a while to see if Grice appeared. Ten minutes later Grice’s name' was again; called but there was no, appearance of accused, and a 'warrant for his arrest was issued.
