FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “The Guardian” Mar 12, 1881), Ashburton Caledonian Society. A meeting of directors oi : the Caledonian Society was held in Quill’s Hotel last night to elect a secretary. There, were six directors present anil Air S. Saunders presided. There were six applications for the position and Mr J. McLean Dunn was unanimously elec-\ ted. A meeting of the members was afterwards held at which the vicepresident (Dr. Stewart) presided. The meeting was called to arrange about giving a Scottish welcome to the Govei nor on his visit to Ashbur-, ton. A committee consisting of Dr. Stewart, Air Douglas and the secretary was set up to go into the matter. Ashburton Volunteers—lt is understood that the Ashburton Volunteers will assemble to form a guard of honour at the railway station on the arrival of tne Governor on Monday next. The Rangitata Road Bridge.—A public meeting of the ratepa3 T ers in the Geraldine Road Board district was held at Geraldine on Friday last to consider a proposal by the Alount Peel Road Board to contribute £IOO toward the cost of the extension of the Rangitata Bridge, provided .the Geraldine Road Board contributed a similar amount. It was finally decided to contribute £530 toward the extension of the bridge on condition that a rate he struck over the whole County at 6d in the £.
