{From Our Own Correspondents). METHVEN. A very enjoyable dance wa so held in the Anglican Hall on Saturday evening under the auspices of the Bachelors’ Club. There was a good attendance, and those present danced to spirited music played by Mr L. Allred. Miss B. Beary played an extra, and Mr W. Grieve acted -as M.C. Novelty dances were held, a Monte' Carlo waltz being won by Miss Olive Watson and Mr Knox Cook, and a Snowball dance by Miss B. Beary. . The following are the meteorological observations for May, as recorded by Mr James Carr, “ltudstone, Metliven: Rain fell on 10 r days, the maximum fall being 76 points on the loth, compared with 1.28 inches foi the some month last year. The total for the year to date is 16.94 inches, while for the same period of 1929 the total was 10.84 inches. The highest maximum reading of the thermometer was 69, on the 11th, and the lowest minimum 27, on the 22nd and 2oth. The lowest reading on the grass was 18. on the 25th, showing 14 degrees of frost. The highest reading of the barometer was 30.40, on the 10th, and the lowest was 29.52, on the 28th.

MOUNT SOMERS. Apart from the changeable conditions at the month end, ideal weathei conditions were experienced during May, which enabled farmers to complete the transportation of gram to the markets, as well as keeping all farm work well advanced. Stock, too, benefited by the mild conditions and much of the earlier pessimism felt m regard to winter feed has been allayed. Rain fell on 11 days, totalling 260 points, compared with 142 for the same period last year. The maximum. 83 points, was recorded on the loth. Ihe year’s rainfall to date totals 20.18 inches, as against 11.58 inches for the corresponding period last year, r rosls were registered on 27 mornings, ma.ving a total of 61 for the present year, compared with 56 last year. The maximum, 16 degrees, was registered on the 22nd. Snow fell once. Following a mild north-west spell, rain set in from the south-west yesterday morning, and showery conditions continued throughout the day, - 4 points being recorded to-day At a special meeting of the Mount Somers Domain Board, held on Saturday evening, there were present Messrs E. C. Wood (chairman), H. H. Hood, G. L. Nell, J. McClimont. Oi two tenders received for the cutting and grubbing of about 11 chains of gorse and broom along the closed road adjoining the Domain reserve, that o. Mr W. McClimont was accepted. It was reported that the application by the Mount Somers Football Club that electric lights be installed with a view to holding night practice, had been acceded to and it was hoped to ha* e the lights completed this week, lue question of erecting a kitchenette at the library was held over pending further particulars in regard to costs.

RAKAIA. The weeklv meeting of the Rakaia Mutual Improvement Society was hela in tlie Methodist Church on Thursday evening,, Miss R. Evans presiding. Alt P Birkett gave a very interesting address on “The Bible—its origin, translation difficulties, and early history. He was accorded a vote of thanks The opening meeting of the Rakaia Band of Hope was held in St. Mark s Schoolroom on Friday evening, when Mr A. AYilson presided over a fanattendance. The speaker was the Rev. R. Morgan, of Methven, who gave r. very interesting address .on “T.ie Reehabites.” Recitations were contributed by Frances Rapley, Betty Corbitt, Jean Gray, Dorothy Langley, John Evison, and Tom Cornelius, anrl a vocal duet by Frances Rapley and Daphne Smith. Eight new members were enrolled. The rainfall during May amounted to 190 points, compared with 141 points for May in 1929. Rain fell on seven days, the heaviest falls occurring on May 15 and 16, when the gauge recorded 62 points and 56 points, respectively. The rainfall for the first five months of the year has totalled 10.02 inches. HINDS. The Football Club’s fortnightly dance, held in the hall on Saturday, was well attended. Music was supplied by Chapman’s Band, and Mr F. Hood was M.C.
