CONDUCT OF HOTELS

COMPLAINTS BY POLICE. BETTING AND SERVING WOMEN. POSITION IN DUNEDIN. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. Drinking by men and women together in a number of hotels was the chief complaint of the police to the annual meeting of the Dunedin Licensing Committee. It was reported that while some licensees prohibited mixed drinking, others encouraged it. The police also reported that in consequence of the prosecution of bookmakers for illicit business in homes and offices they were extending their operations to hotel bars. Some licensees encouraged this for trade purposes. The committee expressed strong disapproval of mixed drinking as undesirable, tending to lead to improper situations. WELLINGTON COMMITTEE’S STAND. WELLINGTON, This Day. Mr E. W. Page, S.M., said at the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day that the committee will view with disfavour applications for renewals of licenses where it was shown that bookmaking is or had been carried on. Inspector Rawle said that unfortunately betting was not an offence under the Licensing Act. Further, xo prove that an hotel was improperly ; conducted, improper conduct must be supplemented with drunkenness.
