AIRPORT OPENING.
NINE ’PLANES PROMISED
POSSIBILITY OF FOFR -MORE. Replies so far received by the Ashburton Borough and County Councils to their" invitations to ’plane owners to lie represented at the official opening of the Ashburton Airport on May 17 show that at least nine ’planes will he present. There is a possibility of two ’planes coining from Wellington and one from Hamilton.
These, with four from Wigram Aerodrome, would make 13 ’plc„nes at the function. Arrangements arc well in hand, and a pageant of considerable nroportions should he staged, reaching even greater hounds than was at present anticipated. New Zealaii.l Airways, Ltd., Dunedin, will send a Sinnnonds Spartan threoseater; the Marlborough Aero Club will send a Moth, and will also he represented by Mr H. R. D'ix (president of the club); the Canterbury Aero" Club is sending two Moths; Miss Arolia Clifford will he here with her AvroAvian ; three, and possibly four. Moths will come from Wigram; Flying-Officer H. L. Piper will have his Desoutter monoplane, in which he flew from England to Australia on his recent adventurous flight. No reply has yet been received from Mr F. C. Chichester, who- has been asked to bring the Moth in which lie flew from England to Australia, and f’aptain M. C. McGregor (of “War Birds” fame) has also to he heard from. The Goodwin, Chichester Aviation Company, Ltd. (Wellington) will probably he represented, and there is a likelihood of the Wellington Aero Club sending a coupe Moth.
