REDUCTION IN FARES.

TAXIS IN WELLINGTON. (Special to the "Guardian.”) WELLINGTON, April 10. Fallowing the announcement that the three chief taxi-cab companies in Auckland have reduced their fares, a similar move has been made by a Wellington firm operating twelve cabs. It is intended to charge Is a mile for four passengers, instead of 2s 9d for the first mile for one passenger and Is 6d for each additional mile. Each additional passenger was also charged another sixpence a mile under the old charges. It is stated by the organisation concerned that it has no intention of starting a taxi “war.” Through reducing its charges to an absolute mimimum it hopes to attract those people who would otherwise not ride, in taxis: This motive is held to be strong enough to warrant the alteration in the fares being regarded as a legitimate trade move, and not a mere temporary step to increase business.

It is understood that the two largest Wellington taxi companies, operating about eighty cases between them, have no intention of altering their fares.
