RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MEETING AT RAKAIA. In accordance with the policy laid down by the Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union, members of the committee have commenced a series of* visits to country clubs with the aim of improving the standard of football. A visit was paid to the Rakaia Club on Wednesday evening, when Messrs S. H. Sullivan (president), H. D. Johnston, R. H. Bjggar, J. C. C. McLach-

lan and H. J. Chapman (members of the Management Committee) were oresent. Mr C. Evison (president of the club) presided over a large attendance. Mr Sullivan, by means of the blackboard, gave a thorough explanation of tactics, the work of the forwards and scrum formation, orthodox and unorthodox methods of attack from the scrum, line-out work and general back play. He Avas followed attentively throughout his address.

Mr Chapman spoke on the off-side rule, also illustrating, his remarks by means of the blackboard; while Mr Biggar dealt with some of the more difficult rules of the constitution.

The speakers were thanked by Mr Evison on behalf of the member's.
