A GREAT JOURNALIST.

MR C. P. SCOTT HONOURED. (United Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, April 8. A great journalist was honoured today, when! Mr C. P. Scott, who recently retired from the editorship of the '"'Manchester Guardian" after 57 years' service, received the Freedom of the City of Manchester.

The Lord Mayor of Manchester, who presided, said 'that Mr Scott had regarded his position as a public, trust. He had fought to secure justice and freedom both at Home and abroad. No one had done more to increase the prestige of British journalism throughout the world. He was an international figure. What bad probably inspired the greatest admiration: was his absolute fearlessness, and more than once Mr Scott had taken his professional life in his hands by espousing a manifestly unpopular cause.—British Official Wireless.

A notable editorship, extending over 57 years, came to an end when, the resignation of Mr C P. Scott from the editor's chair of the "Manchester Guardian" was announced. Mr C. PScott became editor of the "Manchester Guardian" in 1872. He was succeeded by his son, Mr E. T. Scott, who has been"on the staff of the paper since 1912, and for the last three years its chief leader writer. Mr C. P. Scott remains governing director. . Though 83 years of age, he continued in real harness virtually to the day of his resignation. Till after his seventieth year he was still cycling to his office in the heart of Manchester every day.
