LECTURER OPPOSED.
“NO MORE WAR” MEETING. A TIMARU RESOLUTION. (Special to the “Guardian.”) TIMARU, This Day. A “no more war” meeting at Timaru took an unusual turn when the audience passed a resolution disagreeing with the sentiments expressed by the principal speaker. The address was marked by frequent ir.terjectiohs. The lecture was given in the Unitarian Hall by Mr C. H. Cole, Dominion organiser of the “New Zealand No More War Movement.” There was a fair attendance to listen to Mr Cole’s lecture on the subject of “Compulsory Military Training: New Zealand’s Great White Elephant.” At the conclusion of the address, Mr G. T. Koller moved: “That this meeting accords to Mr Cole a hearty vote of thanks for his courtesy and courage in- addressing this meeting.” Mr Koller expressed appreciation of the fairness, broadmindedness and tolerance of the lecturer in presenting his case to a hostile audience.
Lieutenant-Colonel L. M. Inglis, Commanding Officer of the Canterbury Regiment, moved as an amendment “That this meeting expresses its disagreement with and disapproval of the sentiments expressed and the statements made by the lecturer.” This was seconded by Captain A. N. Oakley, Reserve of Officers.
Before presenting the amendment, the chairman, the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., asked the mover to include in his amendment the customary expression of thanks to the lecturer, but this Colonel Inglis would not do. The motion was defeated, and the amendment put and carried.
