The drought has ended as .21 inch of rain fell last night, and it is continuing fairly heavily. The rain is very welcome to farmers, and if it continues it should relievo the power shortage. WAIPUKURAU INUNDATED. WAIPUKURAU, April 8. A heavy thunderstorm, accompanied by vivid flashes of lightning and followed by a torrential downpour of rain, struck Waipukurau and district this afternoon. The parched nature of the ground rendered it unable to absorb the phenomenal downpour, 110 points in three-quarters of an hour. Stormwater drains could not- cope with it, and the water backed up and entered several shops and inundated the streets in the lower portion of the town. No serious damage was done. The countryside will benefit greatly. A Napier-Palmerston North service car bad its magneto struck by lightning, necessitating towing into the Waipukurau garage, a distance of nearly a mile.
