FALSE PRETENCES.

LARGE AMOUNT INVOLVBD. OVER PERIOD OF SEVEN YEARS. RESULT OF HEAVY BETTING. (Per Press Association.; DUNEDIN, This Day. At the Police Court this morning, John James Arthur, aged 48, a married man with 11 children, appeared on five charges of having obtained moneji from John Russell by false pretences. The amount involved was £I7BO, spread over a period of nearly seven years.

The evidence showed that the money was obtained from an elderly fellowemployee, who had known accused nearly all his life. Accused led Russell to believe that the money was going to various people, being covered by mortgages. Accused, in a statement to the police, said he had been betting fairly heavily. At the start he needed the money to meet his obligations. He was in hopes of having a big win to pay the money hack.

Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail being refused.
